The Model as Muse + The Costume Institute Gala

Yesterday, I went to the press preview of the Costume Institute's Model as Muse exhibit which I will be writing about for The Radar.

All I can say for now is, if you live for fashion, adore models, and want to see iconic clothes (Veruschka's YSL safari tunic! Brooke Shields's Calvin Klein jeans! and more!) and magazine covers from the 1940s onwards, then this is a must-visit! With a carefully curated selection of photos, clothes on loan from designers, vintage magazines and art installations, one can easily understand how models, fashion designers, editors and photographers have fed off each other's energies and created images and styles that have dictated the looks and attitude that inspired each era (Kate Moss somewhat disagrees though). The exhibition runs from May 6 to August 9, 2009 at the Tisch Galleries at the Met. Read all about it on The Radar!

Of course, when I got there, the Museum staff and workers were in a frenzy preparing for the Costume Institute Gala, only the biggest fashion event in NYC!

Here's how style.com described the glamorous affair...

Entering the Metropolitan Museum for tonight's Costume Institute Gala, guests were greeted by a six-foot mannequin, perched atop an urn and ringed with hundreds of white roses. A creation of honorary chair Marc Jacobs, the svelte totem was draped in fabric and crowned with an enormous wig designed by French hairstylist Julien d'Ys. The message was clear: "All hail the supermodel!"

Because I was not a guest, and was there pre-event, this is what greeted me. The impressive mannequin was there all right...

But the white roses were still inside the tubs, by the columns...

Even if the lobby was not fully decked up that morning, I can just imagine how fabulous this was in the evening! Marc Jacobs was the Honorary Chair for this year's Costume Institute Gala, with co-chairs Kate Moss...

Justin Timberlake...

and Anna Wintour.

For more of the evening's celebrities, models, and designers in attendance (visibly absent at the evening's festivities were Alaïa's girls - Naomi Campbell and Stephanie Seymour, no thanks to bruised egos and ruffled feathers), check out style.com's coverage here.
