Fashion Foresight

Hey Christine! You really give good fashion advice and tons of choices too.. =) so I am turning to you..I just got an invite to a friend's wedding in September in NY, its at 11 and its formal. I dont know what to wear!!! I dont know what to wear to a morning formal. The evening formal is what I know. Its still in 3 months but I prefer not to rush. Thanks! - Raissa

Hi Raissa! I've never been to a morning formal but good thing I've got tons of Martha Stewart and InStyle wedding magazines bought from my trip there last month, I can tell you what dresses would be perfect for the occasion! I must say I admire the fact that you're planning your outfit three months in advance! It really pays to be prepared! So bravo to your fashion foresight! You also mentioned that you are petite and the reception will be at Tavern on the Green. The place indeed is "a real show- stopper overflowing with crystal chandeliers, hand-carved mirrors, and stained glass" as their website describes, and with those grand surroundings, I want to ensure that you will not only fit in, but you will also "stand out"!

Given that its daytime, I'm thinking short, sweet and made of chiffon or organza would do the trick! The reason being, these fabrics don't look ridiculous in the daytime. Slinky satin, shiny taffeta or a sequined dress isn't exactly considered the height of elegance in daywear. Since you are petite, I'm sure you will look great in short dresses and flowy fabrics too. Here are some styles of dresses that I think will be apt for you and the occasion...

Organza wrap dress from Celine
Pleat front silk dress from Graham&Spencer
Strapless pleated dress from Chloe

You can also go for printed chiffon if you really want to stand out! Take note that florals are especially popular for daytime weddings...

Floral print silk chiffon from Missoni
Balloon sleeve dress from Alberta Ferretti

Of course, though the dresses above are indeed very pretty, it'll cost a fortune. So check out BCBG, Max Studio and Filene's Basement for similarly styled dresses. Btw, wedding magazines like InStyle and Martha Stewart have plenty of ideas for bridesmaids that will also work for wedding guests...

Thanks Christine! Those are pretty dresses. I like the Celine, Chloe and Missoni one. I love the color of the dress from Celine. Its starting to be a favorite color of mine and I think it will look nice with silver strappy shoes. But I am really almost loving the chloe one. Must get some courage to wear strapless though LOL I shared your blog to friends of mine who are attending the same wedding since we are somewhat clueless. Oh I buy InStyle Wedding too and thanks I will check it out. I forgot to check if the one with Jordana Brewster is for spring/summer or fall/winter.

I prefer to plan ahead since from now till june 2008 I have a lot of formal events to go to and just thinking about it naloloka na ako, most of them debuts. also having an idea will make me be on the look out when I go to the mall. These dresses are a bit pricey but I bet similar to these can be found somewhere cheaper. Oh any stores in Manila that you can recommend to find similar dresses? I am asking my sister to look for a dress for me in Manila and just have it sent over here.

Thanks a lot! =) You are such a big help!

oh you are a psychic too because your recommends conceal the tummy area. I dont think I will have washboard abs by sept with how we pinoys are eating LOL and the necklines on these dresses are the recommended ones for my body shape YAY!

Hahaha! Very good planning I must say raissa! And yes, I agree that the Celine and Chloe dresses would look great with silver strappy heels! Very nice! I can imagine it na! Oh and yup, that one with Jordana Brewster is for Spring 2007! Lots of pretty dresses too! I have yet to scan that though since I left my copy in the office, heehee!

Here in Manila, your sister can check out Coraliz in Market Market for designer overruns like BCBG, Cacharel, and Anna Sui. She can also go to Jessica in Shangri-la, Rockwell and inside Rustans. You can also buy ready to wear dresses from Debbie Co, my favorite designer! Her shop is on Jupiter Street, Makati - where IO ktv is. I usually have my formal dresses made by her. But if you want cheaper dresses, you can always go to Sari-Sari store, Cinderella and the like =)

Thank you! Thank you! That pic from InStyle (silver/grey v-neck dress right side) I have it dog-eared in my copy. I liked it from the first time I saw it. Thanks! I will let my sister know about those stores. With so many semi-formal/formal events for me in the next months I really have to plan ahead. Thanks! =)
