Boogie Wipes: 'Snot Your Average Wipe

My friends Miche & Evee brought in Boogie Wipes to the Philippines, and even if they weren't my friends, I just have to stress here that Boogie Wipes is a diaper bag staple. No doubt about it.

These are not only good for taking out boogers, they are great for wiping noses when the kiddos have colds. Usually kids hate it when you have to wipe their nose, because for one, tissues can get scratchy to a point that its irritating. Second, after days of wiping your nose, the nose gets dry, raw and sensitive. It can be torture really.
But you get none of that with Boogie Wipes. In fact, pediatricians recommend Boogie Wipes as a gentle, effective alternative to a dry tissue. The wipes are moistened with natural saline so it's easy to clean crusty boogers and it takes care of runny noses in a snap. It just seems to melt and swipe away both wet and dry mucus that it's no longer a struggle to take them out.

Plus, kids love the grape and fresh scents. Berry wants to keep on using Boogie Wipes even if she doesn't have a booger or colds. She just thinks of ways on how she can get to use them.

Whenever Xavi has colds, I'd use Boogie Wipes to clean his nose, and I am happy to report that even after days of using it, his very young and tender skin remains that way. I swear, a 30 count pack might seem like a splurge at about Php299 a pack, but it is so worth it.

In the Philippines, Boogie Wipes is available at Nurture Nook on Estrella Street in Makati, Toys R Us Greenbelt 5, Glorietta, Boni High St, Trinoma, Shang, Eastwood, Galleria and soon in Rockwell and Magnolia. Boogie Wipes will also be at Babyland stores by May 2013.

For more about Boogie Wipes, check out their Facebook page or email 3busybeesmerch@gmail.com for inquiries or orders.

Boogie Wipes in the Philippines is exclusively distributed by 3 Busy Bees Merchandising, Inc.

Graduation Gift Ideas at Tory Burch

Berry's Moving Up Day happened early this month. My cousin Thea graduated from ADMU last Friday. It's the last week of March and you know what that means? Summer is here!

I've always thought of graduating as kind of a big deal. It meant looking forward to a leisurely/busy summer, depending on how you roll. And of course, bigger things ahead. Kindergarteners moving up to big school, Catholic school girls leaving the sheltered confines of high school for college (no more uniforms! and aha! boy classmates!), and for college and graduate school grads, well its on to the "real world". Whether you want to or not, heehee.

While graduating is a mix of equal parts excitement, relief, nervousness and anticipation of what's to come, one of the fun parts of this milestone is getting gifts.

So parents reading this, here are some great tips from Tory Burch to make sure your graduate is truly happy on her big day!

A wall of bags? Not necessarily. Although that would be great too, we've whittled this down to three styles that are youthful and stylish as they are practical. All made from leather, not only will these last a long time, they'll look great as they age too.

The Robinson Double Zip Tote (Php30,950) in Parisian Blue is made from durable saffiano leather that holds its shape well and is pretty much resistant to scratches.

It has 2 zipper compartments for keeping valuables in, and a center which is held together by a magnetic snap - to stash items that need easy access. What I love most about this is the roomy size  (14"L x 10.5"H x 5.5"D) and the fact that it comes with a detachable 24" long shoulder strap. That's like having two bags in one!

The Stacked T Satchel (Php26,650) in classic black pebbled leather also comes with a 16" long shoulder detachable strap. Very roomy too such that it can fit a small laptop inside (14"L x 13"H x 5.5"D) and still have room for other essentials.

The ladylike Priscilla Small Frame Satchel (Php31,950) comes in a smooth matte leather and can totally go from day to night. Don't let the dainty look of this bag fool you. It's a great sized bag at 11.75"L x 10"H x 5.5"D and as with the Robinson tote, it has pockets for 2 smart phones and a slightly shorter 20" detachable strap.

In my opinion, bags make great graduation gifts because they come in handy, literally. I remember when I graduated from college, I had to borrow this matronic bag from my mom for job interviews. It didn't really suit me, but I had no choice since all I had were school bags that wouldn't go with my skirt suits. These bags we have here? Totally fit for the job hunt. Great construction, wonderful leathers, discreet logos at prices that won't make you balk.

But if your daughter is more of a shoe girl, or if she already has access to your bag collection, then these pretty but still sensible flats should make the cut.

The Nora Loafer (Php14,950) in bright navy suede with fluo pink trim is so much fun! Here's the kind of flat I wouldn't mind stepping into each work day.

Imagine this with navy trousers and a crisp white shirt, or an all dark ensemble that would let the fluo pink trimming pop!

It's a look that says "I'm responsible, but I know how to have fun."

Now the Dakota Loafer (Php14,950) in iced coffee with navy trim patent leather are reminiscent of Belgians, which are just the sort of shoes discreet, Social Register types have been wearing for generations.

Very chic with a dainty bow that can work with jeans, trousers and even dresses and skirts. Just the kind of pair that can take a girl from work weekdays to laid back weekends.

Bottom line is, proud and beaming parents, remember to get a gift your graduate not only needs, but will love! If you have to take her to the store so she can choose, by all means do so.

While surprises are fun, it's always more fun to get something that you truly want.

A huge "Congratulations!" to the parents and graduates of 2013!

Wink Laser & Wax Studio

Liz of Project Vanity invited the SoMoms to Wink Laser & Wax Studio early this month, so we could see for ourselves what it's all about. Wink, by the way, is tucked on the third floor of Bonifacio High Street Central. Right on top of Nolita and Sariwon thereabouts.

Now, I have never gone to any of those waxing salons or laser hair removal places because uhm yeah, like a teenage girl, I am still into shaving in the shower, and Sally Hansen wax strips.

But, the promise of painless and reasonably-priced hair removal did it for me. Because I cannot, for the life of me, imagine spending tens of thousands for tortuous hair removal. I just can't. My best friends, Aileen and Nina have had their leg and armpit hair follicles laser-ed years ago, but I just didn't, couldn't get myself to jump into their bandwagon. Haha. Plus, I have hygiene issues.

So when we walked inside Wink, OMG. So modern and fancy! Not clinical at all. I can imagine getting de-fuzzed here.

And well, OMG. Holly Chang, the girl with the most beautiful skin ever, who also happens to own Wink changed everything for me. She sold me on unlimited laser hair removal. Because for one, there's Paylite ya know. Two, she says, it's painless! Three, the rooms are super duper clean. Clean, yes. Clinical, no. Can we get a collective, "Oooooh!"

Here's the laser room:

Now, here's the wax room:

Holly shares she is very finicky when it comes to cleanliness, so she makes it a point that everything they do at Wink is up to par with her standards. I swear, the place is spic and span. You can eat off the floor.

Liz got us to try the services at Wink, and I went for balbas or rather, upper lip waxing. It was virtually painless. Quick and easy. Wink uses this kind of hard wax developed by Lori Nestore, aka the "Wax Queen", that was pleasantly warm and took out hair efficiently. I also like that my therapist sent me off with a reminders list so I don't irritate my skin after.

Much as I wanted to try laser, or do something more substantial, I just had my leg and kili-kili hairs shaved because I join my kids in the pool for their swimming classes. So no can do there. But I am sold on lasering my underarm hair. Ingrowns begone!

Holly told us that they use a laser machine, the Alma Soprano Accord, that promises pain-free hair removal. Check out the info-graphic.

Here's how laser hair removal works.

I repeat. It usually takes 6-12 sessions to get 80% of your hair follicles to stop producing hair. So if you're counting in the thousands per session, don't fret. There's always Paylite. Wink, wink.

What's New from Celeteque Brightening

Eye to eye with aging: La Roche-Posay Anti-Wrinke cream & Celeteque Eye Tuck plus Dark Circles Lightener

Yes, it cannot be denied. Age ain't nothing but a number, until your wrinkles tell you otherwise. It doesn't even whisper at the hint of it. It just stares you right in the face.

So yes, that is why I am all about creams, moisturizers and serums now. When you are in your late 30s, you just got to grab aging by the horns and deal with it.

Homegrown brand Celeteque (yes! Celeteque, while sounding French, is actually owned by Unilab) has new products that promise to keep the signs of aging at bay. To start with, there's Eye Tuck plus Dark Circles Lightener which is clinically proven to reduce puffiness around the eye area and to significantly lighten the skin around the eyes in just 4 weeks. Did I just say lighten dark eye circles? Well, hello! Nice to meet you!

I am writing this post at 1 am, and boy am I glad to know this: Many believe that lack of sleep is the main cause of dark circles and puffiness that form around the eye area, but the real culprit is accumulation of water and fat. Fat deposits under the eye create the puffiness, not only fatigue and lack of sleep. And because the skin under our eye area is thinner and does not have oil glands, the skin gets looser and fine lines and wrinkles develop faster.

Céleteque Eye Tuck plus Dark Circles Lightener contains EyeserylTetrapeptide Complex, which counter the formation of loose skin surrounding the eye area and fight water accumulation. It promises to do the trick in 7 days or less by improving skin elasticity in the eye area, and lightening the skin around it in only 3 weeks.

Aside from the Brightening Eye Tuck plus Dark Circles Lightener, other products in the Céleteque DermoScience Brightening line include the Brightening Facial Wash, Brightening Tri-benefit Power Cream, Brightening Dark Spot Corrector and the Brightening Multi-benefit BB Cream.

While I'm onto the CC cream these days, I cannot wait to try Celeteque's BB Cream!

Anything that would make my skin look flawless, I like!

A Pledge to PLAY: A Disease Awareness Campaign

Late last month, Berry and I, along with the rest of the SoMoms were invited by Janice Villanueva aka Mommy Mundo to Protection, Love, and Activities for Young Kids or P.L.A.Y. - a disease awareness raising campaign at The Fun Ranch in Ortigas.

While I make sure that the kiddos vaccination schedules are followed to the letter, because hello, health is wealth, I thought it was still worth our time to learn more about vaccinations. I mean, I don't really even question our pedia as to why we have to have them done, it always is just a given that it has to be done. I saw my mom meticulously looking at our immunization charts growing up, so taking my cue from her, I make sure I do the same for Berry and Xavi.

So it was with rapt attention that I listened to pediatrician Dra. Carmina delos Reyes' talk about preventable diseases via vaccination.

Thankfully, Berry and her friends Gabbie, Reese and Anika were kept busy with their own activities, because it allowed me to really take in the lecture. And it was OMG. Did you know that each year, roughly a million children die from Pneumococcal Diseases or PDs?  Pneumococcal diseases include invasive ones also known as IPD such as meningitis, sepsis, bacteremia, and pneumonia, and other common diseases such as acute otitis media.

PD is considered as the #1 killer of children less than 5 years of age worldwide, pneumonia in fact kills 37 Filipino kids each day! Meanwhile Acute Otitis Media (AOM), more commonly known as an infection of the middle ear, causes twenty million doctor visits annually. As a mom, I find these statistics horrendous, because these diseases are actually preventable through vaccination.

I can just imagine the stress of having your kid sick with colds, so imagine the intensity when it's something serious, even life threatening. Now imagine how horrible it would feel if you knew you could have done something to prevent that from happening.

I don't mean to be a downer, but this is serious stuff that us parents shouldn't take for granted. When it comes to our health, it's always better to be proactive than reactive. Here's to a safe and fun summer for everyone!

Protection, Love, and Activities for Young Kids or P.L.A.Y. is a disease awareness raising campaign organized by Mommy Mundo in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline, a global leader in preventive healthcare. For more information, visit www.mommymundo.com/vaccinate.

Baby Jane Booties & Bows

A month or so ago, my friend Candy aka @cuckoo_sing told me that her friend Marie makes baby shoes and wanted to send something for Xavi. I was excited of course, but more so when I opened her package and realized she makes the cutest baby shoes ever!

These 100% cotton baby booties from her line, Baby Jane, are reminiscent of the Robeez ones that Berry wore when she was still learning to walk. Since Robeez are made of leather, and a bit too warm for our weather here in Manila, these cloth baby booties are just perfect. Plus, the prints are too cute!

Baby Jane also has bow ties for boys, that doubles as a hair bow for Atchi Berry!

Marie is an interior designer by profession, so it comes as no surprise that she has a finely tuned eye when it comes to prints and color. Every piece she makes has a fun, preppy vibe and look simply super chic and adorable on the little ones!

There really is a special quality in her booties and bows. Maybe because everything from Baby Jane is handmade with love, the booties are thoughtfully pre-washed using biodegradable detergent and come in canvas dust bags complete with care instructions.

I think these make great baby shower, christening or birthday gifts for baby boys. Receiving one makes you feel like much thought and care was taken in choosing that particular piece given to you, much the same way when Marie sat down to make that one special piece with her own loving hands.

To order or for more info, follow @babyjane.ph on Instagram.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

From time to time they also requested Copenhagen snuff, Havana cigars and jars of petroleum jelly, which Ida massaged onto her face for several hours each day. She was five feet tall and 70 pounds, nearly deaf and stooped like a question mark, but her face still bore clear evidence of its former beauty. “You could see what an extraordinarily pretty woman she once was,” O’Brien noted. “Her complexion, in spite of her age, was as creamy and pink and unwrinkled as any I have ever seen. It was like tinted ivory. Her profile was like a lovely cameo.” She hadn’t had a bath in years. - From blogs.smithsonianmag.com

A couple of weeks back, I read this story about a rich recluse who lived at the Herald Square Hotel in Manhattan from 1907 to 1932. She had the most amazing skin. Well ok, the story was really about how she lied about her past, and how she managed to snag this rich guy, and how she ended up with so much money but lived a life shut out from the rest of the world.

But the part of the story that stuck with me was her skin care routine! Because hello, this old lady, Ida Wood didn't take a bath for years and yet her skin "was creamy, pink and unwrinkled...like tinted ivory". You know why? Because she massaged petroleum jelly on her face for several hours each day. Now, here's proof that the "No Water Skin Routine" really works.

Inspired by Ida, I now religiously use all my serums and creams. I've made it my mission and vision to really moisturize day and night. One time, I used Dr. Perricone's Cold Plasma and when Dada kissed me good night, he retched and said I smelled like fish. Whoops! Wahaha.

Making a conscious effort to moisturize really has made an impact on my skin. Not only does it feel softer, I can actually go out and not wear makeup, not even face powder. But the goal is to have unwrinkled skin well into my old age. So honeys, even with the summer heat, try and look for a non-greasy moisturizer for your face, let's keep the wrinkles at bay!

PS - I believe in you Ida, even if your life was a lie.

PPS - Here's one more proof that French women believe that tap water is the enemy. The Frisky's "The French Woman's Secret to Beautiful Skin".

PPS - Apparently, 33% of French girls between the ages of 15-19 start using anti-wrinkle creams via They Frisky's "How French Women Stay Hot When They're Old".

A Sunday at Pinto Gallery & Museum

We used to not go out on weekends. As in we would just stay home and "chill". A habit we picked up from living abroad. When you have to stay home on weekends to go to Costco, do the laundry, and iron clothes, haha.

But the thing is though, now we have two young kids who need to go out and see the world. They need to have life experiences, see things, meet people and go places. So we would take them on drives out of town, usually to the South.

Sundays are particularly hard. Because you don't want to go too far lest you get tired and not be up for the work week ahead. So when I realized that Pinto Gallery was open on Sundays, and that it was less than an hour's drive from where we lived, I thought, aha! This is the place to go! Especially since Dada and I just recently started collecting art and learning all we can about it.

The parents of my best friend Nina, are close family friends with Dr. Cuanang. So from her past pictures, I already knew that it was a nice place to spend a weekend at. A mix of Mykonos and Mexico, with lots of fantastic art.

The weekend we were there, the artist Jia Santos-Estrella, who I knew way back when she was the buyer for Ferragamo and Gucci at SSI, still had pieces on display from an exhibit of her work, called "Le Maison".

Most of the pieces had been sold so these were the only ones there:

Like Sonya's garden in Tagaytay, I love the breezy feel of the place and the pockets of pretty at Pinto:

Of course, people go there to see major artwork. Such as this one below called "Karnabal" by the artist collective Salingpusa.

Plenty of pieces by Neil Manalo:

...including the astounding "Confluence", a great 64 piece social realist masterpiece by the same artist. A departure from the work he typically does now, which is, to my mind less social realism and more positive vibes.

Plenty of amazing pieces by Manny Garibay in this gallery as well.

A small door opens up to another wing that houses major, again I use the word major, pieces by Elmer Borlongan, Ronald Ventura, Marina Cruz, Nona Garcia, Mark Justiniani among others.

Here Berry plays on the ramp (yes, Pinto is wheelchair friendly) with walls full of Borlongans.

There's Disabled Fiddler on left by Borlongan. Haunting and touching at the same time. Aha! Is the ramp an installation meant to complement this piece?

Should you go hungry, or you just want to take a rest from art overload before heading off to the new wing filled with the latest generation of contemporary art, there's Bizu at Pinto:

So imagine yourself sitting there, sipping a cup of coffee with some cake, the wind blowing, bamboo leaves rustling in the background. Or maybe you're having a tall glass of cold Coke and gambas? Which is what we had, ahihihi. Relaxing no?

Once, you've recharged, then you're ready for more art from the likes of Winner Jumalon, Joven Mansit, JP Antido and the gang:

JP Antido above and Joven Mansit below

Kariton Katedral by Tence Ruiz with background piece by Jaypee Samson

Costantino Zicarelli's "We are the kids that your parents warned you about"

painting also by Zicarelli

More pieces by up and coming artists and pockets of pretty spaces:

Exposing Berry to art at an early age, even if she's happy with a kalachuchi
She wears a dress by Ines Moda Infantil from Mothering Earthlings

Even a random bench is pretty. Or is this artwork I am not supposed to sit on? Haha.

A video installation by Geraldine Javier. I was mesmerized by the story of an old lady who collected dead birds. Oooh! More benches! Ok fine, that was a real bench above ahaha.

Again, paintings and pockets of pretty:

Spot the triptych by Zean Cabangis and a painting by Keb Cerda

I want a Ferdie Montemayor, doesn't have to be as humongous as these. Love the spirit of movement captured in all these pieces.

Another pocket of pretty:

And a huge wall of fabulous pieces by Demetrio Dela Cruz, Dale Erispe, Erick Villaruz, Lynyrd Paras, among others as a parting shot.

I love that the museum is set up by "time frames" starting from the 90s. While you get to wander each wing, it feels as if you are led from era to era in Philippine contemporary art, allowing you to trace its history and development. Thoughtful, powerful curation on vast white walls, bright and airy spaces, amidst an idyllic spot in the mountains a short drive from the city. What's not to love?

Whether you like art or you just want to go to a lovely place with plenty of fresh air, or maybe you have visitors and tourists from abroad, this is a fabulous way to spend a Sunday, or any day that Pinto Gallery is open, for that matter.

In case you're wondering, that's Friday to Sunday.
